The Demon-Haunted World is a collection of twenty-five essays, several written with Sagan’s wife, Ann Druyan. The essays range in scope from eloquent paeans to science to impassioned denunciations of bigotry, from humorous accounts of a variety of pseudoscientific endeavors to serious attempts to understand the nature of alien abduction delusions. With intelligence and wit, and the rational calmness that is his trademark, Sagan takes on a wide variety of topics, among them: alien abductions, astrology, Atlantis, the Bell Curve, channeling, crop circles, demons, electromagnetism, ESP, the face on Mars, fairies, faith healing, magic, miracles, prayer, religion, Roswell, satanic rituals, therapy, and, of course, one of his favorite topics, UFOs and extraterrestrials. - read on..

This book changed my life. Not in the physical sense, it helped me to understand how superstition throughout the ages has kept society ignorant. Which is wonderful for the ruling class. Just think about that goddamn cheese sandwich.

Carl Sagan, according to his wife Ann Druyan, left this world without a last-minute conversion. He’s been my hero for a long time, and this book says more about the realities of the world than I’ve ever found the eloquence for. His was a great loss for free thinkers everywhere.

Carl Sagan is the Man, of responsible skepticism. His rational approach to learning, and even just his general plan of action, as offered in this book is something every good science school program can use! In the end, society benefits most.
If ever there was a book to subscribe to, one that cuts past the confusion in life, in the universe of human beings around, one that can be called extremely positively reasonable, it would be this one. Carl, your history will live on forever. Thank you.

Could anyone recomend any mp3 playing software that is capable of displaying the whole 13 hours or so in the play list?
or has anybody else noticed a problem of duration using WMP, MusicMatch Jukebox or winamp (is there really 13 hours of chatter or only 4)?

I read this book a few years ago, and happy to hear it on audio book. Carl Sagan is my hero for exposing the bullshit in old and new age superstitions. Yes, and iTunes works best!

One of the things I like about Carl is that he uses marijuana for the same reason I do - to loosen up the thought processes, allowing access to ideas and associations that would normally be unlikely to be forthcoming.

This is the most important book you will ever read. Too bad Bush and his thugs can’t read. They need this badly.

Throughout the eons of time great men and women appear, leave their mark then they are gone. Behind them they leave a world with a greater understanding of itself through their enlightened knowledge and visionary aptitudes. I am almost tempted to say that they were gifted by God to bring to the peoples of the earth enlightenment, yet many of these great seers and scientists would deny the very existence of God,while others bow down to a greater diety.
I guess in the final analysis we are no further on now than when we started: WE JUST DONT KNOW?:

Thanks! I was hoping to find this for sale, but since I couldn’t, I appreciate it! Here’s a vote to bring this one back in print and audio of the lectures the new book is based on out on CD!

How did I miss this book back in 1997. Dawkins is now making a splash with his THE GOD DELUSION. Ten years ago, Sagan tried to educate the world. Maybe Dawkins and Harris can pick up where Sagan left off. Is the world finally ready? I doubt it.

Has anyone else noticed that there is missing audio at about 10 mins and 45 seconds into this? Right before Chapter 1 starts.
“In this heady atmospher I was able to fill in some” …… and Chapter one starts
