His latest work, the two hour and fifteen minute magnum opus Drawing Restraint 9, was shot in Nagasaki Bay on board the Japanese whaling ship Nisshin Maru.
Its core idea is the relationship between self-imposed resistance and creativity, a theme it symbolically tracks through the construction and transformation of a vast sculpture of liquid vaseline, called “The Field”, which is molded, poured, bisected and reformed on the deck of the ship over the course of the film.
Barriers hold form in place, and when they are removed, the film tracks the descent of form into states of sensual surrender and formal atrophy; this shift in the physical state of the sculpture is symbolically mirrored through the narrative of The Guests, two occidental visitors to the ship played in the film by Matthew Barney and Björk, who we first see taken on board, groomed, bathed and dressed in mammal fur costumes based upon traditional Shinto marriage costumes.
They take part in a tea ceremony in which, in the film’s only moment of spoken dialogue, they are informed about the history of the vessel, and then, as an increasingly powerful lightning storm breaks out overhead, the tatami mat room they occupy floods with liquid vaseline, a fluid which we sense has emanated from The Field sculpture itself.
In a harrowing liebestod which is the climax and centerpiece of the film, the Guests, locked in an embrace and breathing through blowhole-like orifices on the back of their necks, take out flensing knives and cut away each other’s feet and thighs. The remains of their lower body are revealed to contain traces of whale tails at an early stage of development, suggesting rebirth, physical transformation, and the possibility of new forms.
Having reached a state of maximum disintegration, the sculpture of The Field is then reorganized and the ship emerges from the storm, sailing through a field of icebergs towards the open southern ocean. In the last shot, two whales can be seen swimming behind the ship, headed for Antarctica.

Drawing Restraint 9
REVIEW By LESLIE FELPERIN
A Restraint LLC production. (International sales: Celluoid Dreams, Paris.) Produced by Matthew Barney, Barbara Gladstone. Directed, written by Matthew Barney.
With: Matthew Barney, Bjork, Susil Osoma.
A tapestry of sensuous, striking and sometimes disturbing imagery, “Drawing Restraint 9″ marks the latest cinematic visit to the wacky world of experimental artist Matthew Barney, whose five-film “Cremaster” cycle recently globetrotted the fest and rep circuit. Barney’s key collaborator this time round is his wife, popstar Bjork, who co-wrote and performs most of pic’s music and stars opposite Barney as a visitor to a Japanese whaling ship. The Icelandic siren’s involvement may lure extra viewers to the rocky shores of “Restraint,” but Barney’s defiantly recondite aesthetic will hold the pic in the same kind of restricted distribution pattern as “Cremaster.”
Easy enough to describe but almost impossible to decipher, the core idea of “Drawing Restraint 9″ is, according to the pic’s press notes, “the relationship between self-imposed resistance and creativity.” Probably only Barney, his circle and most loyal followers will be able to explain how that notion relates to what’s seen on screen, although it still makes for frequently mesmerizing viewing.
Action takes place primarily aboard real Japanese whaling ship the Nisshin Maru, whose crew comprise the film’s extras. In the pic’s first major sequence, workers assemble a roughly 15-foot-long mold on the top deck in the shape of a lozenge with a horizontal slash through it. Icon appeared throughout the “Cremaster” series and has become Barney’s de facto logo.
Into the mold, the workers pump hundreds of gallons of hot liquid petroleum jelly that slowly cools and coagulates to form a white, vanilla-pudding-like mass (called “The Field,” per press notes, although the name is never mentioned onscreen). Later, it’s carved, sliced and left to disintegrate into an icky, gloopy mess.
Meanwhile, while “The Field” is being filled, two unnamed Westerners, played by helmer Barney himself and Bjork, separately make their way to the boat. Once aboard, servants help them dress in strange variants of Japanese wedding costumes. The guests then enter a cabin for a tea ceremony with a Japanese host (Susil Osoma). In pic’s only spoken interlude, the host explains the history of the ship in Japanese.
During a storm, the surrealistic detritus provide a melting pot for Western and Asian cultures to collide, matched by a parallel blurring between humans and whales. A melancholy song sung by Will Oldham at the film’s beginning, its lyrics derived from a Japanese whaler’s letter to General MacArthur, ties together the whaling and East-meets-West themes. The process of making art seems to be more the point than delivering a tidy author’s message to the audience.
Bjork’s sometimes pretty, sometimes discordant noodlings show off her unique vocal stylings to fine effect, and are accompanied often by harps and an ancient Japanese instrument called the sho (like pan pipes, but more intricate). Additional original compositions are based on the traditional growling musical performances in Noh theater.
Top-quality prosthetics and make-up devised Gabe Bartalos, and seamless visual effects work by Matthew Wallin complete a polished technical package.

A Natural Love Story: Matthew Barney Talks About “Drawing Restraint 9″

I saw this in theaters twice. It’s amazing–but I thought it was never going to be released on video. Where does the rip come from?
Comment by Cory — put December 14, 2006 @ 4:26 am
It’s from an advance screening copy sent to curators of festivals, museums and critics. There will probably never be an official DVD release due to how Matthew Barney’s films are funded (by individual investors who own copies of the work).

i know this may be a dumb question but i’m new at this. is there really that muhc difference between the AVI file and the DVD5 ISO? besides the size, that is.
i just want the best-quality but if there isnt much of a difference, it’s fine.
thanks!!

Comment by andycherry — put December 20, 2006 @ 11:26 am
there is a easy way of fixing this. download “MPEG4 MODIFIER” (google it), load in the file and remove the XVID profile. the aspect ratio is wrong too, change that to 16:9. save the file again, and then its fixed.
Comment by easy way to fixe file — put December 20, 2006 @ 8:07 pm
@Dr.Grey: so much tahnks for the DVD Iso really amazing!
@andycherry: The AVI has pretty good quality, but the DVD will be for sure betetr.
Comment by easy way to fixe file — put December 20, 2006 @ 8:14 pm
The DVD will certainly be higher quality. The AVI is a compressed format. Still very good quality, but not the best. Its similar to an MP3 vs CD Audio.
Thanks Dr Grey!!

hey there-
i’m aware that the ISO might take a long time to DL but i’ve been trying for a week using shareaza and i’m at (almost) 19%. this is with a constant connection. has anyone else successfully downloaded the full ISO? this is the first torrent i’ve ever tried and i don’t know what to do. it says i have something like 9,000 days left. at this point i’m not even sure if my very old computer (it’s a gateway astro running windows 98) is even going to be able to hold the whole file.
i would be willing to trade or buy or do practically ANYTHING to get a copy of this DVD (the actual DVD and not the AVI) as soon as possible. if someone can do this, please contact me @ onbehalfofandycherry@gmail.com . thanks very much for any advice or assistance in helping me obtain this phenomenal work of art.

I can’t make it to a theatre as I work all the time and cannot take time off, so I would appreciate any help. Thank you in advance. I have the soundtrack and like that, also. Though I have not seen the film it does not take away from the soundtrack, I enjoy Bjork’s work.

Thanks for the torrent! I respect mr. Barney’s concept of selling this movie as a limited edition only and not releasing it on a dvd for the general public… but, hell, it’s Björk! I want everything (music/movie) she does on a disc. So this is great. I’ve seen the movie twice in a cinema… and I love to have it on dvd. I hope pressdvd-copies of the cremaster series will be made and leak cause the VHS quality sucks.
Comment by error — put February 15, 2007 @ 6:18 pm
I was away when it was screened for 3 days at my local theater and I thought I’d probably have to wait years for a chance to see it. I’ve just started DL, so hopefully it will be seeded long enough for it to complete. And I promise I’ll keep seeding it for at least few weeks once I’m done.
As other people said I think I can understand M. Barney wanting it to be treated as an exclusive piece of art, but come on - he makes it harder to get to than any other art object. I mean if it can be in any museum’s permanent collection and one can just go there when they get a chance is one thing, but being a moving target is completely different.
So, I feel a little guilty about taking advantage of this, but not too much.
Thanks for whoever uploaded it and to everybody that keeps it active.

i am very, very grateful for the 4 gig dvd rip of this film. i burned the video ts folder to a dvd using toast titanium and the movie seems to have a problem at chapter 24, about 130 minutes into the film. instead of continuing thru the rest of the film, it hangs on this one chapter and just loops it repeatedly. did anyone else encounter this problem, or is it just me? thanks.
Comment by joe — put February 20, 2007 @ 8:40 am
Chapter 24 are the end titles… at which point *exactly* do you have problems? Which scene?
Did you try to burn a second copy? Did you mount the .iso file with Toast and play the DVD from the disk image? Same problems?

to “error” - thanks for your response.
i have burned it a second time now, and this time a different problem arose, but around the same point. the dvd played fine thru chapter 22. chapter 23 played, but it was actually the same material as chapter 2. then, chapter 24 was the same material as chapter 3, the end.
i am not sure how to mount the ISO file from toast as you suggested. when i am in the “dvd from video ts” screen, i do not seem to be able to preview the movie i am burning, as i am able to in the regular “dvd video” screen. any suggestions would be great. thanks.
Comment by joe — put February 21, 2007 @ 12:05 am
joe, I can’t reproduce your problems… I have only tested by burned dvd on my Mac, so not on an external dvd player.
Which version of Toast are you using? Just choose ‘Mount Disc Image…’ from the Toast Utilities-menu and select the DR9.iso file. Once mounted (check your desktop), start the Apple DVD Player software. This will think you have a dvd inserted (don’t have a real dvd mounted on your desktop, otherwise the DVD Player will get confused).
You can also mount the .iso file with ‘Disk Utility’ (Applications/Utilities).
Comment by error — put February 21, 2007 @ 12:21 am
thanks for your quick response. i am using toast 7 titanium on my mac.
when i played the burned dvd on my mac, it just gives me an error message when i reach about chapter 23, and stopped playing.
another bummer is, i downloaded the 1.4 gig avi file, and although VLC player will play the entire length of the film, i cannot get toast 7 to recognize it as a 144 minute film. toast still considers it to be a 104 minute film.
you can write to me at josephtsai@sbcglobal.net if you like. thanks again “error.”

For those who downloaded the .avi version and were commenting about how the movie is only 1:45:19 long instead of the full 2:25:50 version and you could only watch it with VLC player, try this.
Download Virtual Dub, open the file you downloaded in it, set the video for direct stream copy, set the audio for direct stream copy and then in the file drop down menu select save.avi, name the movie whatever you like. When it is finished compressing you will have the full 2:25:50 version that can be played with any player as well as a stand alone divx player.

Its a shame really that Barney couldn’t have released at least ONE of his films for general public viewing though I respect his aim as an artist to keep the bulk of his work exclusive. But geez, does one really have to be a millionaire to own an artists dvd? His exclusive Cremaster dvd was sold for half a million dollars.
